Wheelchair Team Selection Process

AITA Selection Policy for ITF World Team Qualification Event – Wheelchair Tennis

1. Objective

The purpose of this policy is to establish a clear, transparent and merit based process for the selection of the Indian Wheelchair Tennis Team for participation in the ITF World Team Qualification Event.

The selection shall be based primarily on the latest AITA Wheelchair Ranking, while ensuring that the selected team is capable of representing India.

The ITF recognises the BNP Paribas World Team Cup as its official wheelchair tennis team event, with qualification events conducted prior to the World Group event.

2. Team Composition

The Indian Team shall consist of:

  • Three (3) Main Players
  • One (1) Reserve Player
  • One (1) Coach

The Coach shall be nominated separately by AITA in accordance with the requirements of the event and the recommendation of the relevant AITA Committee.

3. Basis of Player Selection

The three main players and one reserve player shall be selected on the basis of the latest AITA Wheelchair Ranking available as of the date of the meeting of the AITA Masters Committee & Wheelchair Committee at which the team selection is considered.

For the purpose of selection, the player's ranking position shall be determined by considering the combined points earned from Singles and Doubles in the AITA Wheelchair Ranking.

This approach is intended to recognise players who demonstrate competitive performance across both singles and doubles disciplines, which are integral components of team competition.

4. Selection Procedure

The selection process shall be as follows:

4.1 Ranking List

AITA shall prepare the latest available AITA Wheelchair Ranking immediately prior to the meeting of the Masters Committee & Wheelchair Committee.

The ranking shall include the applicable Singles and Doubles points of eligible players.

4.2 Combined Ranking Points

For each eligible player, the following shall be considered:

Combined Points = Singles Ranking Points + Doubles Ranking Points

Players shall then be placed in order according to their combined points.

4.3 Selection of Main Players

The three (3) players with the highest combined points shall ordinarily be selected as the main members of the Indian Team.

4.4 Selection of Reserve Player

The player ranked immediately next in terms of combined Singles and Doubles points shall be nominated as the Reserve Player.

The Reserve Player shall be available to replace any selected player who is unable to participate due to injury, illness, withdrawal, ineligibility, visa issues, or any other unforeseen circumstance.

5. Tie in Combined Points

In the event that two or more players have identical combined ranking points, the following criteria shall be applied successively to determine the higher-ranked player:

  1. Higher Singles ranking points;
  2. Higher Doubles ranking points;
  3. Higher position in the latest AITA Wheelchair Singles Ranking;
  4. Higher position in the latest AITA Wheelchair Doubles Ranking.

If the tie remains unresolved, the matter shall be referred to the Masters Committee & Wheelchair Committee for a final decision.

6. Committee Approval

The final selection of the team shall be placed before the AITA Masters Committee & Wheelchair Committee for consideration and approval.

7. Coach Nomination

One Coach shall be nominated by AITA to accompany and support the Indian Team. The nomination of the Coach shall be approved by the competent authority of AITA.

8. Final Authority

The AITA Masters Committee & Wheelchair Committee shall have the final authority in matters relating to the interpretation and implementation of this selection policy.

Any matter not specifically covered under this policy shall be decided by the Committee in the best interests of Indian Wheelchair Tennis and the national team.
